synopsisLISZTOMANIA - Starring Roger Daltrey A wild and imaginitive send-up of the bawdy life of Romantic composer/piano virtuoso Franz Liszt (played by The Who's Roger Daltrey). Director Ken Russell utilizes ubiquitous phallic imagery and devotes a good portion of the film to Liszt's "friendship" with fellow composer Richard Wagner. The film begins during the time when Franz would give piano performance to a crowd of shrieking teenage fans while maintaining affairs with his (multiple!) mistresses. He eventually seeks Princess Carolyne of St. Petersburg (at her invitation), elopes, and, after their marriage is forbidden by the Pope (Ringo Starr), he embraces the monastic life as an abbe. "The erotic, exotic, electrifying rock fantasy... it out-Tommy's Tommy" BONUSES: Director's Commentary by Ken Russell, booklet, theatrical trailer Lizstomania Starring: ROGER DALTREY SARA KESTELMAN PAUL NICHOLAS RINGO STARR Directed by KEN RUSSELL (C) 1975 "Post-Beatles Rococo...For Mr. Russell, the shortest line between two points is a pretzel." Vincent Canby - The NY Times "Rage...That was my immediate reaction to 'Lisztomania', Ken Russell's latest and most perversely self-indulgent 'music appreciation' fantasy." Peter G. Davis, NY Times "Russell is living proof that a filmmaker today can do practically anything." Variety "A berserk exercise of demented genius..." Roger Ebert dvd information

DVD Review - laurence warder
“ .A surprisingly curious piece of car crash cinema...”
DVD Graveyard - laurence warder
“It pushes the rock musical right out over the top and out of the playing field. It is a film that needs to be experienced. It’s wild, wacky, makes no sense, extravagant, over the top…a real Ken Russell film.
Den of Geek - laurence warder
“Possibly Ken Russell’s barmiest film-and that’s a competitive area-finally hits DVD. It bursts with ambiguous inspiration and indulgent excess. Worth it just to subject others to its moments of transcendent insanity and watch their jaws drop open…”
Clash - laurence warder
“Lisztomania is almost completely free of focus, yet delightfully good fun and as daft as it is eccentric…”
DVD Outsider - laurence warder
“Daltry is a revelation here, selling the quieter moments of pain and frustration as completely real. It’s a wild and excessive work that’s cloaked in madness, but also an intelligent, energetic and consistently imaginative one with genuine cult potential. The sort of British film that, rather sadly, has no even remote equivalent today…”
Little White Lies - laurence warder
“No film like this could be made today. Lisztomania is undoubtedly insane but it’s dated enough to be kitsch without becoming quaint…”
The Times - laurence warder
“Utterly fantastic. Roger’s singing and acting, Paul’s insane ebullience and, yes, the giant penis- well you just can’t fault those, can you….a timeless cult classic…”
Uncut Magazine - laurence warder
“Lisztomania’s patent absurdity appears determined to outdo Tommy. Buried under the grandstanding are serious points about compromise and artifice…”
Stool Pigeon - laurence warder
“… Beautifully shot, looks like it was a hoot to make…Daltrey pulls out all the stops for a riotous performance…”
