BEATS OF THE HEART

Jeremy Marre’s pioneering and award-winning music series ‘Beats of the Heart’ explores the music of contrasting communities across the world, showing how their rhythms and lyrics portray the history, dreams, struggles and aspirations of their people.

The first three films of this independently-produced 14 hour series have now been released on DVD in the UK by Digital Classics DVD.

Digitally restored, each DVD offers outstanding additional recordings by the world’s finest musicians; interviews; a 12-page illustrated booklet written by Jeremy Marre; a stills gallery and a director’s commentary which provides great insights into the making of these groundbreaking films.

ROOTS ROCK REGGAE depicts a dynamic moment in time for Jamaica’s reggae music, when its greatest artists sang of the ‘confrontation of struggle’ within their island. It features live performances by Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff with Sly and Robbie, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, The Abyssinians, The Mighty Diamonds, Inner Circle, Third World, Joe Higgs, and many more.
First shown on BBC TV, it has been screened on television and in cinemas across the world, and won The Milan Grand Prix for best music film.

SALSA is the first documentary film to depict the history, street life and social impact of this infectious Latin music. Shot in New York and the Caribbean, it presents Salsa as ‘the conscience of a people’ and features performances by such legendary Latin musicians as Tito Puente and his band, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz with Johnny Pacheco’s band, Ray Barretto, Willie Colon, Charlie Palmieri and many more. First shown on The South Bank Show, Salsa won the Golden Harp Award for best world music documentary.

RHYTHM OF RESISTANCE was the first portrayal of black music under apartheid. This now legendary film depicts South African music as joyous resistance to a system based in violence and discrimination. This film features performances by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahotella Queens, Abafana, Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu, Philip Tabane and Malombo, and many more.
First shown on The South Bank Show, this film had an enormous impact: politically and musically. It was shown secretly at the time by the ANC (headed by Nelson Mandela), and influenced, among others, Paul Simon to record ‘Graceland’ in South Africa with many of the same artists.

Each 60 minute film has been digitally restored and includes extensive bonuses (director's commentary, 12-page booklet essay, rare audio recordings from Celia Cruz, Jimmy Cliff, Ladysmith Black Mambazo etc...)
