Messiaen’s religious works for the organ have been compared with those of Beethoven in their greatness for the solo instrument. La Nativité du Seigneur is no exception: its virtuosity embraces a magnificent cycle of nine meditations on the Christmas message.
Jennifer Bate, one of the foremost international organists of our day, is famous for her interpretation of modern and romantic music. In particular, she enjoys a unique reputation as a world authority on the French composer Olivier Messiaen, and was his organist of choice. She worked closely with Messiaen for many years. Messiaen wrote, “Jennifer Bate is an excellent organist, not only for her virtuosity but for her musicianship and sensitivity in chosing her timbres. She is a really accomplished musician who loves what she plays and knows how to make others love it too.” Her recordings of his complete organ works
have won international acclaim and many prestigious awards.

This recording of Jennifer Bate playing La Nativité du Seigneur was made in the magnificent setting of Norwich Cathedral, when a capacity audience gave her virtuoso performance a prolonged ovation. The cathedral’s beautiful stained glass windows, medieval art by Memling and Grünewald among others, and Norman architecture add a superb visual element to the programme.
