Natalie Dessay introduces and performs "Et maintenant ecoutez ma chanson" from Hamlet.
From the full opera: FROM THE THEATRE DU CHATELET, PARIS Ambroise Thomas’s HAMLET A grand opera in five acts, libretto by Michel Carré and Jules Barbier after William Shakespeare Directed by Nicolas Joël Conducted by Michel Plasson Sets by Ezio Frigerio Costumes by Franca Squarciapino Principal Cast Hamlet - Thomas Hampson Ophelia - Natalie Dessay Claudius, King of Denmark - José Van Dam Queen Gertrude - Michelle DeYoung Laertes - Marc Laho The Ghost of the King - Markus Hollop Marcellus - Jean-Luc Maurette Horatio - Philippe Fourcade Polonius - Laurent Alvaro First Gravedigger - Jean-Louis Melet Second Gravedigger - Rodolphe Briand Chorus and Orchestra National of the Capitole, Toulouse HAMLET Rarely performed today, Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet is a grand opera in the French tradition that demands a vocally outstanding cast of principals, including a star coloratura soprano. It finds both in this recording of Nicolas Joël’s new production, mounted for the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and recorded at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Baritone Thomas Hampson gives an exceptional performance in the title role, one that he has championed in recent years; José Van Dam’s rich bass-baritone endows the usurping Claudius with a sombre and forceful presence; and mezzo Michelle DeYoung is a vocally dynamic Gertrude. The French coloratura Natalie Dessay’s performance as Ophelia is a tour de force, culminating in a mad scene of such lyrical and dramatic brilliance that it was greeted mid-act with a spontaneous and thunderous ovation. Michel Plasson conducts Thomas’s ravishing score. Ezio Frigerio’s majestic sets are timeless and allow the action to unfold without interruption, while Franca Squarciapino’s costumes, predominantly in the black of mourning, combine a finely-detailed display of 1920s elegance with magnificent regal finery for the king and queen. Ophelia alone is dressed in white, while Hamlet’s simple attire singles him out from the opulent court around him. Be warned that Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet is not to be compared to Shakespeare’s play. His prince is an energetic and angry young man, not much given to introspection and there are several differences in the plot – including an unexpected ending! download information
